Fluvanna Meals on Wheels Delivers over 200,000 Meals!
Fluvanna Meals on Wheels just celebrated 200,000 home delivered meals delivered! The first meals were delivered in February of 2008 starting with 8 clients and over the past 14 years they have served over 485 clients both on a long and short term basis. The weekend meal program, which was started in January of 2016 by Palmyra United Methodist, Church has served over 30,000 meals so that clients can receive meals 7 days a week.
It takes an army of volunteers each day to fulfill our mission to feed the homebound senior and disabled adults in Fluvanna County. It takes 16 different volunteers each weekday to staff the office, package the food and deliver the meals to our nine routes throughout the county and this does not include all the other volunteers for our other programs” commented Lisa Himes, Board of Directors Chair. Volunteer Coordinator, Amy Smedley commented “we have the most dedicated volunteers and can always use more volunteers as we continue to grow, especially route drivers.”
Meals on Wheels is not just about serving a hot lunch to a senior in need but about building relationships with clients. For many clients, the volunteer driver is the only contact they may have for the day. Himes also commented that the organization is looking to expand the number we serve in the county and to please call the office if you know of a senior adult in need of our services as we help those in the community that may be recovering from an illness or surgery and may need meals short term, we also have no age limit for our services.”
